Somerton Civic OKs neighbors’ zoning requests

The Somerton Civic Association last week gave its approval to two zoning variances sought by neighborhood homeowners.

According to SCA zoning chairman Seth Kaplan, the civic group on Dec. 13 voted unanimously to consent to a woman’s request to operate a small baking business in her home on the 300 block of Buxmont Ave.

That’s a no-outlet street intersecting Overhill Avenue mere yards from the Montgomery County border.

The woman is a single, stay-at-home mom who hopes to make some extra income baking for family and friends, Kaplan said. She doesn’t intend to receive or send commercial deliveries from the house. There will be no on-site sales.

The civic association’s vote of support was conditional upon a deed restriction that the variance would be voided were the woman to sell her house and that she agree not to engage in commercial deliveries or pickups at the house.

In a separate zoning issue, the civic group voted 26–1 to allow the owner of a home on the 11900 block of Ferndale St. to build a 6-foot by 16-foot side addition, intended for use as a shed.

The proposed addition would violate the zoning code’s minimum side-yard width.

In a commercial zoning issue, the civic group’s executive board approved an application by the Sunoco gas station and convenience store at Roosevelt Boulevard and Haldeman Avenue for a permit to sell hot dogs and other prepared foods. The SCA’s general membership sustained the executive board decision.

The next Somerton Civic Association meeting will be on Tuesday, Jan. 10, at 7:30 p.m., at Walker Lodge 306, 1290 Southampton Road. ••
