Owner guilty of torching shop for insurance dough

A federal jury on Thursday found a former Northeast Philadelphia auto repair shop owner guilty of arson and fraud in connection with a May 24, 2010, fire at his business.

The blaze occurred at One Source Motors, 14001 Bustleton Ave. Michael Giamo, 29, of Huntingdon Valley, staged the fire, then collected more than $127,000 in insurance proceeds, lied to fire investigators and attempted to destroy incriminating records, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.

The jury convicted Giamo of mail fraud, conspiracy, using fire to commit mail fraud, damaging or destroying by fire a building used in interstate commerce, making false statements and obstruction of justice.

Giamo faces a mandatory minimum of 15 years in prison and up to life in prison, along with a fine of up to $2 million, along with forfeiture of assets. His sentencing hearing is scheduled for June 20. ••
