Couple found dead at rec ballfield

A Kensington man shot a female acquaintance to death before taking his own life on Saturday at the Lawncrest Recreation Center.

Police were called to the city-owned facility at 6:44 p.m. in response to a report of a shooting. They arrived to find a wounded man and woman lying in a baseball field, said Officer Christine O’Brien, a police department spokeswoman.

Paramedics pronounced Marix Herlinda Gutierrez, 28, of the 200 block of Benner St. in Lawndale, and Marlon Garcia, 31, of the 1000 block of E. Tioga St. in Kensington, dead at the scene within minutes.

Detectives believe that Garcia used a .38-caliber revolver to shoot Gutierrez in the chest and himself in the chin. A domestic dispute was the motive, O’Brien said. Garcia and Gutierrez were not related. ••
