Business group hails big wins in the neighborhood

The Mayfair Business Association met last week to celebrate a couple of victories and to plan for one of the big events of the year.

The business association opposed the opening of a methadone clinic at Frankford Avenue and Decatur Street, and the city Zoning Board of Adjustment voted earlier this month to revoke the operator’s permits that had been granted by the city Department of Licenses and Inspections.

In addition, the business association reported that all went well at the March 3 Shamrock Shuttle, a pre-St. Patrick’s Day celebration that brings hundreds of people to Frankford Avenue-area bars. Members credited the Mayfair Civic Association and the 15th Police District for keeping order.

Business association members are planning the annual Mayfair May Fair, which will take place on Saturday, May 19.

The day will include sidewalk sales and live bands at Frankford and Cottman avenues. Monsignor Charles McGroarty, longtime pastor at St. Matthew Catholic Church, will be recognized as Resident of the Year.

The event is preceded by the Mayfair Fallen Heroes Run, which raises money for college scholarship for the children of Philadelphia police officers and firefighters killed or disabled in the line of duty.

In other news from the March 21 meeting:

• Planet Fitness is seeking to move into a vacant former Fashion Bug property in the Mayfair Shopping Center at 6520 Frankford Ave.

The gym would be open 24 hours. One tenant, Mayfair Shop ‘N Bag, has concerns about a possible lack of parking.

• Friends of Pennypack Park will hold an “e-cycle” event on Saturday, April 21, from 9 a.m. to noon in the Ryan Avenue parking lot of Abraham Lincoln High School. It’ll be held rain or shine.

Visitors are welcome to bring all electronics, whether they are working or not, broken or intact. Large appliances will not be accepted.

A $5 donation is suggested for each large electric or battery-powered item, with all money collected to be used to maintain and revitalize the park.

The event will be held in conjunction with the group’s monthly recycling day, so members will be accepting aluminum cans, books, clothing and printer cartridges.

• Philadelphia Gas Works will be working on a construction project through May on the 7300 and 7400 blocks of Frankford Ave., from Cottman Avenue to Loring Street.

Crews will be upgrading natural-gas mains, service pipes and delivery systems.

Work will take place weekdays from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. There will be no street closings. Repaving will start when the job is completed.

• Northeast Family Service Center, a program of Catholic Social Services at 7340 Jackson St., will host a baby shower on Friday, April 20, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for low-income expectant mothers.

There will be refreshments, giveaways, raffles, music and information.

• The Mayfair Business Association will meet again at 9 a.m. Wednesday, April 18, at Republic Bank, 7300 Frankford Ave. ••
