Pennypack Friends clean up

The threat of rain couldn’t dampen the volunteer spirits of 16 people who took part in the first Friends of Pennypack Park cleanup event of 2012.

Volunteers collected 25 bags of trash and two bags of recyclable cans from the ball fields on the 2600 block of Holme Ave. behind Nazareth Hospital.

The workers included Miriam Adler, Elsie Stevens, Sondra Greenberg, Robert Tullai, Linda Tullai, Alan Ostrow, Linda Davies, Betty Landolfi, Jim Ryan, Nance Kerns, Norma Rudolph, Florence Brodman, Jim Smyth, Joyce Ferrero, Kevin Sweetra and Bill Henderson. Park Rangers Georgia Kolbus and Renee Benson, along with Police Officer Dimitrios Loizos, provided professional support to the group.

The rubbish included two large milk crates, five lawn chairs, a shower chair, broken ceiling tiles, a Merry Christmas flag, a paint can, an iron pipe, a backpack, a St. Hubert’s T-shirt, a baseball, a golf ball, a hubcap, car springs and a station wagon door.

The Friends of Pennypack Park will celebrate Earth Day in April with another cleanup event on Saturday, April 28, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Rhawn Street and Lexington Avenue. The rain date will be April 29. The public is invited. Volunteers are asked to wear long pants and comfortable shoes with closed toes. The committee will supply gloves, grabbers and snacks.
