Frankford residents are rolling up their sleeves

Members of the Frankford Parks Group — and anybody else who wants to help out — will tend to a few small neighborhood parks from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. this Saturday in observance of Love Your Park Week, as well as the following Saturday, May 19.

Kimberly Washington, president of the group, said volunteers will work compost from the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society into the ground at the Hedge Street Park, Hedge and Plum streets, on Saturday.

“We’re also going to cut the grass, plant a few things and clean up the basketball court,” she said.

The group also will put three new raised beds in a small park at Wilmot and Tackawanna streets, and plant vegetables. Two beds were assembled and planted during the city’s spring cleanup day at the same site on April 14. Cucumbers, lettuce, peppers, cabbage, green beans and tomatoes were put in during the cleanup day.

It’s a community garden, Washington said, and neighborhood residents are invited to help themselves when the vegetables are ready for picking.

At Wilmot Park, at Meadow and Mulberry streets, volunteers will spread mulch around recently planted shrubs and trees and clean up the pocket park as well on May 19. Work will continue on that day at the community garden at Tackawanna and Wilmot streets, Washington said.

All three parks were worked on during the April 14 spring cleanup.

“More local people are getting involved” in maintaining Frankford’s small parks, Washington said. People who live near the parks have really been pitching in, as have members of the Frankford Garden Club, she added. ••
