Deadline approaching for homestead exemption

The Burholme Community Town Watch and Civic Association had an uneventful meeting last week as City Councilwoman Maria Quinones-Sanchez and officials from the 2nd Police District were unable to attend.

Quinones-Sanchez (D-7th dist.) was attending late negotiations on June 14, the night Council agreed to delay by a year Mayor Michael Nutter’s revenue-generating Actual Value Initiative for property values.

Aides to City Councilman Brian O’Neill (R-10th dist.) and state Rep. Brendan Boyle (D-170th dist.) encouraged guests to file for a real estate tax relief homestead exemption by the July 31 deadline. Those enrolling are expected to have their homes assessed at a lower rate, resulting in a discount on property taxes.

Quinones-Sanchez, appearing on Saturday morning at her first Block Captain-Community Leader Boot Camp, explained that, for now, homeowners should continue to apply for the homestead exemption. After this Thursday’s Council session, the application process might be pushed back a year.

In other news, Boyle — who opposes the AVI property tax idea — is welcoming women to call his office at 215–676–0300 to schedule a breast cancer screening. The Fox Chase Cancer Center mobile mammography bus will be parked across the street from his office at 14230 Bustleton Ave. in Somerton on July 10.

To receive a mammography, women must be age 40 or older; cannot be pregnant; must not have breast-fed within the last nine months; must not have had a breast cancer diagnosis within the last two years; must not have had a mammogram in 12 months; and must be able to board the bus and stand while being examined.

The Burholme Community Town Watch and Civic Association will meet on Thursday, Sept. 13, at 7 p.m., at United Methodist Church of the Redeemer, at Cottman and Lawndale avenues. ••
