July cleanup a success at Pennypack Park

Seventeen volunteers and three Community Life Improvement Program workers collected 52 bags of trash and one bag of recyclable cans during the Friends of Pennypack Park’s monthly park cleanup on July 28 near Frankford and Solly avenues.

Participants cleaned areas of the park along the paved bicycle path from Frankford Avenue north to the foot bridge behind Father Judge High School, as well as the dirt path from Frankford Avenue north to the railroad bridge over the creek. They also cleaned the picnic area along the Frankford Avenue bridge.

Volunteers included Roland Williams, Louise Kopena, Audrey Walmsley, Anne Costello, Susan Ream, Frank Jakob, Bob McMunn, Linda Davies, Florence Brodman, Jim Ryan, Jim Smyth, Bill Henderson, Joyce Ferraro, Kevin Sweetra and Nance Kerns.

The contingent also included two student volunteers completing community service obligations; CLIP representatives Jim McCarthy, John Liu and Michael Beuttenmuller; and five men performing court-imposed community service.

The debris removed from the park included water flotation devices, a water gun, swim goggles, several plastic coolers, a snow sled, half of a shopping cart, a car tire, a large tarp, half of a picnic table, lawn furniture, two fan blades, a mirror, a step ladder, a pillow, a sofa cushion, a razor blade, part of a scooter, in-line skates, a golf ball, a toy light saber, a car tire rim, a hubcap, flip-flops, a sneaker, a T-shirt, underwear, socks, khaki pants, a metal pipe, assorted store-bought fruit, a fish tank and a U.S. permanent resident “green” card that volunteers delivered to authorities.

The next FOPP monthly cleanup will be on Saturday, Aug. 25, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Volunteers will meet at the ball field behind Nazareth Hospital on Holme Avenue east of Roosevelt Boulevard.

Volunteers should wear long pants and closed-toe shoes. The FOPP will provide gloves, grabber tools and refreshments. Call 215–934-PARK for information in case of inclement weather. ••
