Improvements headed to Lawncrest Rec Center

The Lawncrest Community Association last week welcomed officials from the 2nd Police District and Tacony Academy Charter High School to its monthly meeting.

Also in attendance was Republican congressional candidate Joe Rooney, who favors a balanced budget amendment and cuts in the salaries and office budgets of members of Congress.

In neighborhood news, the PhillyRising Collaborative and the Lawncrest Recreation Center advisory council are teaming to bring improvements to the rec center.

Volunteers from the community and La Salle University will paint, clean and plant at the center, at Rising Sun Avenue and Comly Street, this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. To sign up, call recreation leader Brian Andrews at 215–685–0597.

That same day, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the recreation center, residents can sign up to join Philadelphia Recycling Rewards and receive a recycling bin.

The Friends of Lawncrest Library will sponsor a book and bake sale on Saturday, Oct. 6, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the library, at 6098 Rising Sun Ave.

Bethany United Church of Christ, at 6545 Rising Sun Ave. (at Magee Avenue), will offer a free community dinner on Wednesday, Oct. 17, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. For more information, visit the Bethany United Church of Christ — Lawndale — Philadelphia page on Facebook.

Lawncrest Community Association will meet again on Tuesday, Oct. 16, at 7 p.m., at St. William parish hall, at Argyle and Robbins streets. ••
