Cavanaugh wins ninth annual Northeast Philly run/walk

Michael Cavanaugh was the overall winner at Sunday morning’s ninth annual Northeast Philly 5-Mile Run and 2-Mile Walk at Northeast Philadelphia Airport.

Cavanaugh, 24, battled windy conditions to run a good time of 30:00.4, more than two minutes ahead of the runner-up.

The event is organized by City Councilman Dennis O’Brien (R-at large). Proceeds benefit the Northeast Philadelphia Youth Alliance, which O’Brien formed when he was a state representative.

The alliance consists of the following seven groups: the Academy Sabres Sports Association, Calvary Athletic Association, Liberty Bell Youth Organizations, Parkwood Youth Organization, Penn Academy Athletic Association, Philadelphia Soccer Club and Torresdale Boys Club.

A disc jockey and the Penn Academy dancers entertained the crowd. The Torresdale Boys Club cheerleaders encouraged the runners and walkers along the way.
