Celebrate NE’s finest at Hall of Fame induction

The third Northeast Philadelphia Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place at 1 p.m. Sunday at Holy Family University’s Education and Technology Center, at 9801 Frankford Ave. (at Grant Avenue).

The individual honorees will be astronaut Chris Ferguson; business and community leader Ed Kelly (1926–2012); inventor and solar power pioneer Frank Shuman (1862–1918); and the Rev. Leon Sullivan (1922–2001), a civil rights leader and anti-apartheid activist.

Ferguson, who lives in Texas, will attend the ceremony.

Also being inducted are seven Northeast churches, all at least 200 years old: Unity Monthly Meeting, Frankford (founded 1682); Byberry Monthly Meeting (1683); Pennepack Baptist Church, Bustleton (1688); Trinity Church Oxford, Lawndale (1698); Presbyterian Church of Frankford (1770); All Saints Episcopal Church, Torresdale (1772); and Campbell AME Church, Frankford (1807).

The Rev. Paul Andell, the retired longtime pastor of St. James Lutheran Church in Northwood, will return from his home in Minnesota to speak about the churches being honored.

Also at the event, Father Judge High School senior Alex Citerone will be recognized as the winner of an essay contest. The theme was, Uncovering Northeast Philly: What Makes Northeast Philadelphia Special?

Tickets cost $25 and include a catered cocktail reception.

The Northeast Philadelphia Hall of Fame is sponsored by the Mayfair Community Development Corporation in partnership with Holy Family University, the Historical Society of Frankford, the Northeast Times and City Councilman Dennis O’Brien.
