Rhawnhurst NORC sets next meeting schedules

The Rhawnhurst Naturally Occurring Retirement Community will hold its next luncheon at noon on Thursday, Oct. 25, at the Samuel Tabas House, 2101 Strahle St.

Joey Joy will provide musical entertainment. The cost is $2.

The next meeting after that will be on Thursday, Nov. 29, at the Congregations of Ner Zedek, 7520 Bustleton Ave. The guest will be Anthony J. Mele, executive director of Catholic Clinical Consultants, who will speak about beating the “winter blahs.”

At Rhawnhurst NORC’s last meeting on Sept. 27, the guest speakers addressed the state’s new voter identification law.

Five days later, a Commonwealth Court judge delayed implementation of the law until next year.

Don Garecht, a deputy in the office of city elections commissioner Al Schmidt, told the crowd that the deadline to apply for an absentee ballot is Oct. 30. Absentee ballots must be returned by Nov. 2. The election is Nov. 6.

Mike Tomlinson, the Republican candidate in the 5th Senatorial District, greeted NORC members after the meeting. The group generally does not allow candidates or elected officials to speak to members during meetings so close to Election Day. ••
