15th Police District offers Halloween safety tips and treats

The 15th Police District would like all members of the community to have a safe and happy Halloween and will hand out candy to children from 5 to 8 p.m. at 2831 Levick St. (Harbison and Levick). In return, the district asks that families heed several important Halloween safety tips:

All groups of children should be escorted by at least one adult. Adults who drive on Halloween should be watchful of trick-or-treaters walking and crossing streets.

Children should be reminded never to get into the car of a stranger. If a child is approached by a stranger, the child should scream loudly to alert others and run as fast as possible to a safe place, such as a relative’s home or a public place with other adults present.

Adults should teach young people the difference between “tricks” and vandalism. Throwing eggs at houses and cars, graffiti and broken windows are all criminal behavior and should not be tolerated.

Costumes should inspected for safety. Masks should allow the wearer to maintain good peripheral vision. Costumes should be fireproof or treated with fire retardant. Trick-or-treaters should carry flashlights or glow sticks so they can see where they are walking and are more visible to others.

As usual, children should always look both ways before crossing streets and should cross at corners, not in between parked vehicles. ••
