Mayfair Holmesburg Thanksgiving Parade this Sunday

The Mayfair Business Association will present the 36th annual Mayfair Holmesburg Thanksgiving Parade, which will kick off at noon this Sunday at Frankford Avenue and Rhawn Street.

Participants will march south on the avenue to Knorr Street.

The theme is Neighborhood Unity. The grand marshals will be civic association presidents Joe DeFelice (Mayfair), Mary Benussi (Tacony) and Rich Frizell (Holmesburg).

The rain date is Nov. 25.

High school students who need to perform community service can carry banners.

In other news from the Nov. 8 business association meeting:

• The business association is planning a Christmas tree-lighting ceremony on Sunday, Dec. 2, at Frankford and Ryan avenues. Vendors will be in attendance. The time is to be determined.

• The business association will set up a table on Saturday, Dec. 8, at a WinterFest celebration at Tacony Library, 6742 Torresdale Ave.

The event starts at noon and will include Christmas carols, face painting, a Moonbounce and visits by Santa Claus and alpacas. Guests can also take a trolley tour of historic Tacony.

• Lambie Funeral Home, at 8000 Rowland Ave., will host its fifth annual live Nativity on Saturday, Dec. 15, from 4 to 6 p.m., in its parking lot.

The event will include performances by the Holmesburg Baptist Christian Academy children’s choir, a Father Judge High School jazz combo and the St. Hubert drama club.

Donations of non-perishable items will be collected and sent to St. John’s Lutheran Church Feast of Justice and Holmesburg United Methodist Church’s food cupboard.

The rain date is Dec. 19 from 4 to 6 p.m.

• A happy hour fund-raiser took place on Saturday at the Grey Lodge Pub for a proposed dog park.

Proponents must raise $10,000 for 6-foot-high fencing in an undetermined area of Pennypack Park.

• Back in April, the Holmesburg Civic Association approved, with one dissenting vote, a bid by Liberty Bell Bicycles to build an addition that would be used as a repair area and for showroom space.

The addition has been built, but the business, located at 7741 Frankford Ave., no longer has plans to use that space.

The addition consists of 500 square feet, and there is plenty of parking. Anyone interested in using it for retail space can call the shop at 215–624–7343.

The city’s Zoning Board of Adjustment needed to approve the addition because the shop did not want to have to landscape the perimeter of the property because of cost and the loss of ground for parking and test-riding new and repaired bikes.

• The business association received a quote for security cameras along Frankford Avenue. The cost would be $100,000 for just eight blocks. The group has nowhere near that kind of money to spend on cameras or anything else.

• The Mayfair Business Association will meet again on Thursday, Dec. 6, at 9 a.m., at Republic Bank, at 7300 Frankford Ave. ••
