Plenty of civic action

A number of local community groups are setting agendas for meetings this month.

The Frankford Civic Association will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, in the second-floor conference room of Aria Health’s Frankford campus. Members will consider a zoning variance request for a vacant property at 1709 Gillingham St. The land is zoned residential and the owner wants to fence it and use it to store cars, said Pete Specos, the association’s president and zoning officer.

The East Torresdale Civic Association will meet on Monday, Dec. 10, at 7 p.m., at Liberty Evangelical Free Church, Linden Avenue and Milnor Street.

The Holmesburg Civic Association will meet on Tuesday, Dec. 11, at 7:15 p.m., at Holmesburg Recreation Center, at Rhawn and Ditman streets.

Also on Dec. 11, the Somerton Civic Association will meet at 7 p.m. at Walker Lodge 306, 1290 Southampton Road.

The Burholme Community Town Watch and Civic Association will meet on Thursday, Dec. 13, at 7 p.m., at United Methodist Church of the Redeemer, at 1128 Cottman Ave. (at Lawndale Avenue). The guest speaker will be City Councilwoman Maria Quinones-Sanchez (D-7th dist.). Officials from the 2nd Police District will be in attendance. There will be a discussion about Burholme Pride Day.

Take Back Your Neighborhood will meet on Monday, Dec. 17, at 7 p.m., at Max Myers Playground, at 1601 Hellerman St.

Lawncrest Community Association will meet on Tuesday, Dec. 18, at 7 p.m., at St. William parish hall, at Argyle and Robbins streets.

The Greater Bustleton Civic League will meet at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 19, at the American Heritage Federal Credit Union Carriage House, 2060 Red Lion Road. Zoning issues frequently dominate the league’s sessions, and members are sure to discuss the group’s appeal of a recent Zoning Board of Adjustment decision that will allow manufacturing at 9997 Haldeman Ave., a property with residential zoning. The league’s Web site is www.gbcleague.com.

On Thursday, Dec. 20, the Upper Holmesburg Civic Association will meet to discuss a zoning application for a Torresdale Avenue apartment building. The group will also hold its annual Christmas party. The meeting starts at 7 p.m. at St. Dominic’s Marian Hall, 8532 Frankford Ave.

The Rhawnhurst Naturally Occurring Retirement Community (NORC) will meet on Thursday, Dec. 27, at noon, at Congregations of Ner Zedek, at 7520 Bustleton Ave.

The Millbrook Civic Association’s December meeting has been canceled. The next session will be at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 29, at the Calvary Athletic Association on Deerpath Lane.

The Parkwood Civic Association also will not meet in December or February, but members will get together at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 16, at St. Anselm’s Church Hall on Dunks Ferry Road.

The Normandy Civic Association is another group that will skip meeting in December. Normandy’s members next will meet at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 15, at the Norcom Community Center, 10980 Norcom Road. ••
