So far this holiday season, the Northeast Times’ Eleanor Smylie Fund has collected $9,058 from readers who have donated to their neighbors in need.
With this money, we have been able to send $50 gift cards to 173 families and three social service organizations who work with families that are having a tough economic time.
The cards are intended to be used to buy food for a nice Christmas dinner and toys for children. Many of those who have sent in donations have said they wantd to be sure that each child has a gift waiting for them on Christmas morning.
The need this year seems to be larger in years past. We’ve heard from many people who are having trouble finding a job. Others tell us of medical bills that have thrown their families for a loop. We will honor as many requests as we can.
Our thanks go out to all those who have sent in donations, and our prayers to go out to those who find themselves struggling to make ends meet. We wish a happy holiday to all. ••
