Members of the 2nd Police District Advisory Council honored four officers during their Dec. 11 meeting.
Rob Caroselli, Northeast High School’s assistant principal, had recommended Jerry Furey and Megan Alley, whose patrol includes the Cottman Avenue school, to be named June 2012 officers of the month.
Caroselli said the officers’ patience and poise add calm to the school’s daily dismissal, which puts more than 3,000 youths on the street at one time.
“The businesses, residents and schools along Cottman Avenue all agree on one thing. Officer Alley and Officer Furey make the Cottman Avenue corridor a safer place at dismissal,” Caroselli wrote in recommending the officers.
Officers Kevin Doerr and Steven Berardi were honored as July’s officers of the month.
Gunpoint robberies had been a problem that month, said Mark Mroz, the district’s community relations officer. The officers looked at descriptions of two robbers and noticed one had worn unique clothing. Doerr and Berardi recognized the man’s description and had seen him wearing that clothing a week earlier, Mroz said.
The officers turned up information on that man and other suspects, then turned the information over to a detective investigating the robberies. Two men were later arrested.
While on patrol, Berardi and Doerr were approached by a woman who told them she had been robbed and that she had traced her stolen cell phone’s GPS to the 800 block of Brill St.
The officers searched the area and found a man who matched the description they had been given. The victim later identified the man as one of the robbers.
Mroz asked district residents to attend Police Service Area meetings in January. PSA 1 officers will meet with residents at 7 p.m. Jan. 21 at Max Myers Playground, 1601 Hellerman St. PSA 2’s meeting is at 7 p.m. Jan. 15 at St. William School Hall, Robbins Avenue and Argyle Street. PSA 3’s session is at 7 p.m. Jan. 10 at the United Methodist Church of the Redeemer, Cottman Avenue and Lawndale Street. ••
