Two fatal shootings on Christmas Eve

Authorities have identified the victim of a Christmas Eve murder in the Northeast and ruled a second fatal shooting as a suicide.

Shots rang out shortly after midnight at the rear of properties on the 7100 block of Whitaker Ave. in Burholme. Police found Sylvester Mitchell, 37, of the 100 block of W. Nedro St., lying on the ground with a gunshot wound of the head. Mitchell died at the scene.

Detectives have not disclosed suspects or a motive for the slaying, said Officer Christine O’Brien, a police department spokeswoman.

Later that morning in Mayfair, a 46-year-old man died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police have not disclosed the name of the victim, who was found at 10:23 a.m. behind a property on the 4600 block of Devereaux Ave., O’Brien said. He had a single wound of the chest and died at the scene. ••
