Fatal shootings dampen New Year

A pair of fatal shootings marred the end of 2012 and the onset of the New Year in Frankford.

Authorities have yet to identify a man found dead in a vacant residential lot on the 5400 block of Akron St. on Dec. 29. A neighbor called 911 at about 8:30 a.m. after finding the victim lying in the rear driveway of a lot between row homes, police said. The man was wrapped in a brown comforter and had gunshot wounds of the lower back and right elbow. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

Police have not released details about the shooting, possible suspects or a motive.

Homicide detectives believe an argument sparked fatal gunfire at about 2:30 a.m. Jan. 1 on the 1600 block of Pratt St. Officers went to the scene in response to a report of a gunfight in the street. They found Tyjuan Shields, 24, with a single gunshot wound of the head. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene at 2:45 a.m.

Authorities have not named any suspects or released their descriptions. ••
