Crash kills pedestrian on Frankford Avenue

A Wissinoming woman died on Sunday morning after a minivan struck her on a Frankford Avenue sidewalk blocks from her home.

The crash occurred at about 9:36 a.m. on the 5700 block of Frankford Ave. near Comly Street, said Officer Christine O’Brien, a Philadelphia police spokeswoman. Teresa Marquard, 58, of the 6100 block of Gillespie St., and her husband were walking northbound in the sidewalk adjacent to Wissinoming Park at the time.

A witness told police that a 1999 Pontiac Montana was traveling southbound on Frankford Avenue when it veered into oncoming traffic, mounted the curb on the northbound side of the street and struck Marquard before hitting a tree. Police said that the woman screamed and pushed her husband out of the way as the van approached the couple.

Emergency responders found the victim lying on the sidewalk. She was bleeding from the head and legs and was unresponsive. They took her to Hahnemann University Hospital, where she died at 10:01 a.m.

According to a published report, which cited an unidentified police source, the driver of the van was a 33-year-old man. He was taken to Hahnemann and listed in critical condition.

Police continue to investigate the crash and have filed no criminal charges against the driver, O’Brien said. ••
