Officers honored for arrests

Members of the 2nd Police District Advisory Council honored four patrolmen as officers of the month for February and March during its May 14 meeting at the Philadelphia Protestant Home.

Officers Edward Greene and Joseph Green were saluted for their work in February in capturing a robber who was armed with an illegal — and highly dangerous — weapon.

Responding to a call about a man with a gun on the 1000 block of Cottman Ave. on Feb. 22, Green and Greene met a woman who told them she had been robbed by a man with a dog — and a very large gun. The officers found a man nearby who matched the description the victim had given them. They ordered him to the ground and saw a Mac 10 fully automatic machine pistol tucked in his waistband. The weapon, which is illegal for civilians to own, was loaded with 33 rounds, said community relations officer Dianne Murphy.

Officers Alberino Ciocca and Shamus Nally were honored as March’s Officers of the Month. The two amassed an impressive amount of arrests — for assaults, thefts and weapons offenses — while issuing many traffic and parking citations.

On Saturday, May 18, the PDAC conducted its ninth annual Community Day at the Bustleton Avenue Target store. More than 500 people attended the event, said Larry Genetti, the PDAC’s treasurer.

With support from state Sen. Christine Tartaglione, there were free child fingerprinting, bike registration, document shredding and VIN etching. Representatives of the police K-9, crime scene, marine and counterterrorism units were on hand, too.

Before the Community Day kicked off, 60 people participated in the Second Annual Ken Hyers Memorial Bike Ride. The ride honors the memory of the longtime Lawncrest Town Watch president, who died in September 2011 at age 57. Hyers, who had been the PDAC’s vice chairman, was elected chairman in late 2010, but learned that he was ill and never took office. ••
