Glen Foerd summer fun

A sailing regatta, outdoor concert series and guided tours will highlight programming at Glen Foerd on the Delaware in June.

On Tuesday, June 18, at 5:30 p.m., the Racing Fleet of the Delaware River Yacht Club will open the 20th annual Glen Foerd Regatta. Guests will dine riverside on a picnic-style summer buffet. Iced tea, lemonade and assorted soft drinks are included in the buffet, with a cash bar available for those wishing to toast their favorite sailboat. Maritime music specialist and Glen Foerd favorite Charlie Zahm will provide listening enjoyment. Tickets cost $30 for members or $35 for nonmembers. Reservations are required. The event always sells out.

The 2013 Glen Foerd Summer Concert series will debut on June 25 with the Philadelphia String Quartet. Future performances include the Sounds of Swing on July 16 and Hot Taters: Dixieland/New Orleans Mardi Gras on Aug. 20. All shows start at 7 p.m. Premium seats in the air-conditioned tent cost $3 for non-members and are free for members. There are 160 tent seats available. Lawn seating is free.

As an ongoing initiative throughout the summer, Glen Foerd also will offer guided public tours of the 19th-century mansion every Saturday at 10:30 a.m. and Wednesday at 11 a.m. Tours last for about one hour. Reservations are not required, but visitors should call ahead to ensure that a tour is not cancelled due to another special event.

Guided tours are also available by appointment on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays year-round. Reservations are required at least two days in advance.

Tours cost $10 for adults or $9 for students and seniors. For information about all Glen Foerd events, call 215–632–5330 or visit www.glenfoerd.org ••

Frankford Gazette goes digital

The Frankford Gazette has begun projecting neighborhood news and announcements through the storefront window of 4625 Frankford Ave. The storefront is owned by NorthEast Treatment Centers and is one block south of the Margaret-Orthodox stop on the Market-Frankford line.

The Frankford Gazette is an online and in-print publication run by father-son team Bob and Jim Smiley. Selected Gazette content as well as tweets using the #Frankford hashtag are being broadcast right in to the heart of the Frankford Avenue commercial corridor.

This project, spearheaded by Jim Smiley and titled “DigitalAve,” is a means for the Gazette to expand upon its print circulation and further reach a community with limited Internet access.

“I came back from the 2012 Online News Association Conference determined to find new and innovative ways to ensure the Gazette’s content is reaching the community it’s intended to serve,” said Smiley. “We found a great community partner in NorthEast Treatment Centers, who provided the window space and projector, and are working to find additional opportunities to use the Gazette as a means for building community engagement and awareness.”

Terence McSherry, CEO of Northeast Treatment Centers, added, “We are always looking for ways to be a positive force in all of the communities we work in, which is why we were so excited when the Gazette approached us about this project. We are glad to be able to partner with them to further their mission.”

Jim and Bob Smiley founded the Gazette in May 2007 as a neighborhood blog. In January of 2011, with the help of PhillyRising, the Gazette began a print circulation of 300, which has since increased to 1,000 through sponsorship from Kidz Partners. The Gazette also uses TextBlast, a service whereby residents can be informed of news and upcoming events via text message. ••

Honored at Nazareth

Karen Tranchitella, of Nazareth Hospital’s short procedure unit, won the hospital’s Terry Larkins Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship is worth $2,500 toward an academic nursing degree, which Tranchitella is pursuing at Immaculata University.

The scholarship fund was established by the family, friends and colleagues of Terry Larkins, a nurse educator and nursing director at Nazareth and St. Agnes Medical Center. She died in a car accident in 2002. ••
