Body found in burning car

Firefighters made a grisly discovery after they extinguished a burning car in Pennypack Park last Thursday. There was a human body in the vehicle’s trunk.

Homicide detectives still are trying to confirm the identity of the victim and the cause of death. In fact, the corpse was so disfigured by flames that police weren’t even sure if it was a man or a woman as of Monday afternoon. A medical examiner’s report is pending.

The blaze was reported at 7:17 a.m. on the 2300 block of Woodward St. in Bustleton. The block intersects Winchester Avenue adjacent to the park. The vehicle, a newer model white Lexus, reportedly had been driven into the park on a paved bicycle path.

Police reportedly removed the charred vehicle from the park shortly before 1 p.m. ••
