Plenty of fun in the park this summer

The Tookany/Tacony-Frankford Watershed Partnership will be giving away free water ice and pretzels on Wednesday evenings this month along with information about the creek that skirts the Lower Northeast. TTF also will conduct guided tours of the trails that cut through Tacony Creek Park.

The nonprofit dedicated to restoring the urban stream is billing the 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. events as “block parties,” even though the parties will be missing the blocks.

“The idea is,” said Alix Howard, TTF’s education and outreach director, “that we want people to reclaim their park. It’s kind of overrun with ATVs and shady behavior.”

A trail runs along the Tacony Creek, which eventually becomes the Frankford Creek. There is no trail along the creek as it goes under the Roosevelt Boulevard, Howard said, but the city is planning to put one in.

The TTF events also will be “community resource fairs,” Howard said, and will be sponsored by Philadelphia’s Department of Parks and Recreation; the Scattergood Foundation; the Philadelphia Water Department; the Philadelphia Recycling Rewards program; The Circuit, a nonprofit proponent of trail networks; the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia; Keep Philadelphia Beautiful; the Juniata Action Committee; the Fairmount Park Conservancy; and the Student Conservation Association.

TTF’s July parties will be at:

• Fishers Lane and Ramona Avenue on July 17;

• Whitaker Ave and Loudon Street on July 24;

• Rorer Street and the Boulevard on July 31.
