Pennypack Park monthly cleanup nets 43 bags of trash

Thirty-six volunteers with the Friends of Pennypack Park netted 43 bags of trash, two bags of recyclable cans and a list of assorted, sometimes strange, debris during the monthly park cleanup event on June 22.

Volunteers worked around the Philadelphia Fleadh Irish music festival, which was held on the same date at the Pennypack band shell near Welsh Road and Cresco Avenue. They cleaned up the edges of the park along Cresco, Rowland Avenue, Welsh Road and Winchester Avenue as well as nearby paved and dirt paths.

Among the assorted objects pulled from the woods were a rusted paint can with a brush, a displaced trash can, a steak knife, a cinder block, a bath towel, a real estate sign from Stanwood Street, a lighter, part of a camera, a rake, a section of PVC pipe, part of a tiled bathroom wall (presumably the result of short dumping by a construction contractor), a mop handle, a baseball cap, a boot, a sandal, a flip-flop, a hoodie, a tire, an oil filter, an empty motor oil container, an arrow shaft, a softball, a wagon tire, a baseball, a pacifier, a bunch of SEPTA passes and a pair of 3D glasses. Members of Cub Scout Pack 252 were among the volunteers, including John McMonagle and his mom, Peg; Logan Kentner and his mom, Carol; and Christopher Maher and his dad, Ed, and sister, McKenzie (a Girl Scout Troop 91043 member). Others included Tim and Jeanette Scanlon with their granddaughters, Ashley and Audrey Wendt; Caitlin Nguyen with her children, Gabriel and Olivia; CLIP’s Jim McCarthy and Fabian Checo with three helpers; Andrew Puzdrak; Robert McMunn; Tom Binczewski; Rich Glaser; Debbie O’Connor; Florence Brodman; Alan Kaminsky; Anne Costello; Joanne Becker; Roland Williams; Karen Kaczorek; Kevin Sweetra; Jim Smyth; Bill Henderson; Joyce Ferraro; Jim Ryan; and Nance Kerns. The Friends of Pennypack were scheduled to hold another cleanup last Saturday, and plan to meet again on Aug. 24 at the ball field on Holme Avenue behind Nazareth Hospital. That event will go from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., weather permitting. Call 215–934-PARK for more information. ••
