Elderly man crashes into shopping center

A Pennsylvania Department of Revenue office in the Northeast received an unexpected visitor on Friday afternoon as a Mercedes-Benz sedan crashed through the stripmall storefront.

It happened at about 5:15 p.m. in the Academy Plaza shopping center. Philadelphia police say that an 82-year-old man was behind the wheel when his vehicle careened over a curb and crashed into the tax office at 3240 Red Lion Road. The driver was taken to Aria Health-Torresdale for evaluation, said police, who did not release his name or information about his injuries.

No passenger or pedestrian injuries were reported, although the car and the storefront sustained moderate to heavy damage.

The driver stated to police that he “passed out for a second” and “came to” while hitting the curb and striking the building, police said. ••
