A Northeast teen suffered what the city’s top homicide investigator has called a “very, very brutal and very, very personal” shooting death at a Somerton construction site early Monday.
As many as a dozen bullets riddled the face and head of Daquan Crump, 19, whose body was discovered at 7:19 a.m. in the open-air lot at 10175 Northeast Ave., according to Philadelphia police Capt. James Clark.
The site is the former home of a warehouse-style furniture store and is across the street from the George Washington High School athletic fields. A construction worker found the body and called 911.
Investigators believe that the slaying occurred at about 5:30 a.m., but have identified no suspects or motive. It appeared as if Crump was on the ground in a prone position when the killer or killers shot him.
“He was shot multiple times, anywhere from 10 to 12 times, all in the face and the head area. It was a very, very brutal murder. So we need someone to come forward to contact us with any information they have about this,” Clark said during a Monday afternoon news conference.
Crump left his job at a nearby Wendy’s restaurant at 11 p.m. on Saturday, and police are trying to piece together his whereabouts between then and Monday morning, Clark said. Crump lived with his mother and grandmother at different locations, Clark said. It was not unusual for Crump to stay overnight with girlfriends or male friends, so he was not reported missing, the police captain added.
There were no indications that Crump was robbed. Police found his backpack containing his Wendy’s uniform near his body. The restaurant is at Red Lion Road and Haldeman Avenue, less than a half-mile from the murder scene. Police don’t believe that Crump drove his own vehicle to the scene.
“Right now, it appears that he was either taken or walked into that area and shot multiple times while he was on the ground,” Clark said.
Detectives are still determining how many guns were used to shoot Crump and how many killers were involved.
“It appears like it was very personal and, again, very vicious,” Clark said.
Crump has no prior criminal record or “prior issues with the law,” Clark said.
