Mayfair Business Association announces busy fall schedule

The Mayfair Business Association and its neighborhood partners are planning a bunch of fall activities.

Business association members met last week to help finalize plans for the following events:

• The Mayfair Farmers’ Market will be open on Sundays, Sept. 22, Oct. 6 and Oct. 20 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the 3500 block of Ryan Ave.

• The Mayfair Community Development Corporation will sponsor a Mayfair Merchants Bazaar on Sunday, Sept. 29, from 8 a.m. to noon in the Philadelphia Parking Authority lot at 7100 Frankford Ave.

Organizers are hoping for 60 vendors for the combination craft fair/flea market. The cost is $20 a table. More information is available at the Mayfair Merchant Bazaar page on Facebook.

• The Friends of Mayfair Memorial Playground will host its second annual Halloween Spooktacular on Saturday, Oct. 26, at 11 a.m. at the playground, at Rowland Avenue and Vista Street.

The event will also serve as a grand reopening, as there is newly installed exercise equipment and fencing.

The group is raising money toward adding a toddler piece, a new sign and a badge of honor to fallen heroes.

Children are encouraged to wear costumes, retrieve and decorate pumpkins, play games and visit vendor tables for candy.

To host a vendor table, the fee is $50 and enough candy to hand out to 500–700 kids.

• The business association-sponsored Mayfair-Holmesburg Thanksgiving Parade is set for Sunday, Nov. 24, along Frankford Avenue. The staging area will be at Bleigh Avenue. Organizers are hoping for an even bigger crowd than usual because the Eagles will be on a bye week.

• The business association will hold its annual Christmas tree-lighting ceremony on Sunday, Dec. 8, outside Republic Bank, at 7300 Frankford Ave. Children will be able to make crafts during the event.

In other news, state Sen. Tina Tartaglione (D-2nd dist.) will hold a Senior Expo on Thursday, Sept. 19, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Mayfair Community Center, at 2990 St. Vincent St. There will be entertainment, free health screenings and exhibits.

Also, the Mayfair Civic Association is trying to collect $10 per neighborhood family to pay for legal fees in its battle against a proposed methadone clinic at Frankford Avenue and Decatur Street. The Holmesburg Civic Association is also trying to raise funds from businesses and others. Among the elected officials who have contributed are City Councilman Bobby Henon, state Reps. Kevin Boyle, John Taylor and Mike McGeehan and state Sen. Mike Stack.

Anyone who wants to make a donation can stop by Henon’s office at 6730 Torresdale Ave.; Boyle’s office at 7518 Frankford Ave.; Bellalisa Hair Studio at 3530 Cottman Ave.; and at the upcoming Farmers’ Markets on Sept. 22, Oct. 6 and Oct. 20 on the 3500 block of Ryan Ave.

Meanwhile, the Mayfair CDC has received a $20,000 planning grant to explore the feasibility of a Business Improvement District on and near Frankford Avenue.

The Mayfair Business Association will meet again on Thursday, Oct. 17, at 10 a.m. at Republic Bank, at 7300 Frankford Ave.
