Man steps in front of SEPTA train in Somerton

Authorities say that a man who was killed by a SEPTA train in Somerton last Thursday intentionally stepped into the vehicle’s path.

Philadelphia police have not released the name of the 38-year-old victim because of his suspected suicide. The incident occurred just before 11:30 a.m. on the 300 block of Byberry Road near the Forest Hills station.

Witnesses saw the man walking along the southbound track and platform as he repeatedly looked for an oncoming train, police said. As the West Trenton Line train approached, the man stepped onto the track. The engineer reportedly blew the train’s horn and applied emergency brakes, but could not stop in time.

Paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene at 11:54 p.m. ••
