Cyber classmates meet in the Northeast

Kids who go to a cyber school don’t see much of each other. After all, their classrooms are online. But being online means they can send each other instant messages, and get to know each other that way.

Friendships are made passing electronic notes out there in the great blue nowhere.

But Agora Cyber Charter students do have some class time together and the statewide school sets up several special events for students, teachers and families.

Fifteen-year-olds Craig Phillips of Southwest Philadelphia and Kaleigh Gruber of Jamison met in class online and became friends.

On Dec. 19, they got to catch up in person while doing a little ice skating at the school’s “Winterland” celebration at the Flyers Skate Zone on Decatur Road. The Northeast get-together was just one of several events held all around the state this month by the full-time tuition-free online school. For more information, visit www.k12.com/agora ••

Philly “DoGooder” accepting nominations

Philly DoGooder Awards, a collaboration between impact media leader Generocity.org and the social good creative team at Here’s My Chance, is back for its second year.

In 2013 Philly DoGooder, the first Local version of YouTube’s national DoGooder Awards produced by user See3, launched to celebrate the power of impact storytelling through videos and create opportunities for the region’s emerging filmmakers to connect with nonprofit stories.

In its first year, over 130,000 Philadelphians showed their support for 91 local nonprofit organizations. It was Philadelphia’s largest skilled volunteer program in the city’s history. It also resulted in the creation of 23 new jobs in the impact and creative sector and was the proving ground for a 2013 CNN Heroes Top Ten Finalist, One Simple Wish.

The theme for Philly DoGooder II is “Community Building.” Nominations are now open to include both individuals’ videos and for profits’ videos, as well as nonprofits’ videos. Applications are open through Dec. 31 with only 25 spots available. General awards submissions, for those who have films already complete, run through Feb. 1.

For participating in the hackathon, filmmakers will receive a free group vacation care of ShootStay, a vacation concierge for creative professionals.

Six awards will be announced: three from the hackathon and three viewer’s choice determined by public vote. An overall winner will be decided by the award night attendees.
