Popular Rhawnhurst bakery closes its doors

Hesh’s Bakery

Hesh’s, the Castor Avenue kosher bakery famed for its chocolate chip loaf, is closing, according to a sign on its window and a posting on its website.

The sign on the store on the 7700 block of Castor Ave. and a Web posting went up over the weekend. On Friday, a neighboring store owner said the bakery’s proprietor usually goes on vacation for a few weeks after Christmas, and there was a sign in the window that announced that temporary closing. He said he had no knowledge the store was closing permanently. Another said when she went home Friday at 5 p.m., there was just a sign in the window that it was closed for vacation.

By Monday, a curtain covered the window and the sign that Hesh’s was closing forever was taped inside.

Phone calls and emails to the bakery were not answered by press time Tuesday.

According to the bakery’s website, it was founded in 1959 and produced traditional Kosher products.

During Tuesday’s drizzle, car after car stopped in front of the store with sad-eyed drivers and passengers getting out to read the sign announcing Hesh’s was closing.

One man said he wanted to get hold of the owner because his sister wanted to buy the place and reopen it.

There’s even a Save Hesh’s Facebook page. One commenter on the page asked for the chocolate-chip loaf recipe. ••
