Phanatic coming to Fox Chase
Philly’s favorite green fuzzy mascot will make a guest appearance in Fox Chase this Sunday, as the Cpl. John Loudenslager American Legion Post 366 hosts a fundraiser for its youth baseball program.
The Phillie Phanatic will highlight four hours of fun at the Post 366 hall, 7976 Oxford Ave. Doors open at 2 p.m. Tickets cost $25 for adults 21 and over, $15 for ages 12 to 20 and $5 for kids under 12. Admission includes a buffet, soft drinks and beer (for those 21 and over). There will be auctions, raffles and possibly appearances by other members of the Phillies organization.

PWD slates sewer work in NE
The Philadelphia Water Department will be working on Sussex Lane, from West Crown Avenue to Prince Circle, for sewer work through the summer.
Miniscalco Construction LLC is performing the work, which began on Jan. 15. A water department inspector will be on site every day. The street might be closed to through traffic from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Trash should be placed at the curb as regularly scheduled, and the contractor will assist the Department of Streets with pickup.

Candle started Lawndale blaze
A fire that raged in a Lawndale apartment house during a snowstorm earlier this month was started by the flame of a candle, a Fire Department spokesman said last week. Firefighters arrived at the 400 block of Kerper Street to find heavy flames shooting from the two-story building shortly after 4 a.m. on Jan. 3, said Capt. Clifford Gilliam. Three per-sons were taken to hos-pit-als for eval-u-ation.
Gilliam said anyone who uses candles should extinguish them before they go to sleep. Likewise, they should turn off space heaters.
The Red Cross was on the Ker-p-er Street scene and provided shel-ter to a fam-ily at the Red Cross House at 40th and Pow-elton as well as fin-an-cial as-sist-ance, said spokes-man Dave Schrader.
No fire-fight-ers were in-jured. ••
Fatal fire being investigated
The city’s Medical Examiner has not released the causes of death of a father and son who perished in Philadelphia’s first fatal fire of the new year on Jan. 11, health department spokesman Jeff Moran stated Jan. 15.
He did identify the victims as Karl Mayer, 69, and Thomas Mayer, 32. The cause of the fire in their home on the 12000 of block Salina Place was not yet determined, Capt. Clifford Gilliam said Jan. 15. The fire in the cul-de-sac row house was reported at 9:07 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, the captain had said, and the victims were found in the home after the blaze was under control at 9:37 a.m. ••
Firehouse closing temporarily
Firefighters and paramedics on Monday moved out of the firehouse at Bustleton and Bowler, said Fire Department spokesman Capt. Clifford Gilliam. The firehouse in the municipal building at 9845 Bustleton Ave. that also houses the 7th Police District, city offices and the Police Department’s regional command center will be closed only temporarily while scheduled repairs are completed, Gilliam said. Personnel from Engine 62, Ladder 34 and Medic Unit 6 should be back in about six to eight weeks, he said.
Engine 62 will be relocated to Engine Company 18 at 8205 Roosevelt Blvd. Ladder 34 and Medic 6 will be in the Engine 58 firehouse at 812 Hendrix St.••
