The Kmart at 900 Orthodox St. will close by late April, the discount retailer’s parent, Sears Holding Co., announced last week. The company also is shuttering its Center City store at 901–99 Market St.
The stores will remain open to customers, a company spokesman told the Northeast Times in a Jan. 26 email. Liquidation sales will begin Feb. 9.
“Store closures are part of a series of actions we’re taking to reduce ongoing expenses, adjust our asset base and accelerate the transformation of our business model,” the spokesman wrote.
The Orthodox Street store has 169 employees, most of whom are part-time. ••
