When confronted by an armed robber last Wednesday afternoon, a Tacony convenience store clerk did the one thing you’re not supposed to do.

He fought back.

The clerk was fortunate to escape with his life, while the gunman fled empty handed. Now police are trying to identify the robber.

Philadelphia police released dramatic video of the hold-up on Monday. It happened just before 3 p.m. at Tacony Food Mart, 6648 Torresdale Ave., when the unknown robber entered the business, pointed a gun at the clerk and demanded cash. At first, the employee dropped to his knees as the robber made his way behind the counter.

With the crook waving a handgun at the clerk’s chest and head at point-blank range, the clerk rose to his feet and began to empty the cash register. Moments later, however, the gray-haired clerk lunged for the weapon and tried to wrestle it from the gunman.

The robber apparently got spooked and fled. He was last seen running west on Unruh Avenue toward Marsden Street.

He was described as Hispanic with a light complexion, 25 to 30 years old, 5 feet 6 inches tall and 130 pounds, with short hair, a mustache and a goatee beard. He wore blue jeans and a white hooded sweatshirt with a blue hooded sweatshirt underneath.
