Benefit set for NE native battling cancer

A benefit is being planned for Holmesburg native Jerry Hartman, a liver and colon cancer patient known to many as a friend, coach, mentor and teacher.

The benefit is set for Sunday, March 23, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 5 Heroes Ballroom, 11630 Caroline Road. Tickets cost $40 and include live music, food, draft beer, $2 domestic bottled beer and other reduced drink prices, silent auctions and raffles. Proceeds will go to Hartman’s mounting medical bills. He was diagnosed with cancer last year.

Hartman is a former police officer who worked closely with the Tacony Police Athletic League. He also was a successful basketball coach for St. Bernard CYO. And he’s coached at St. Hubert, Penn State, Penn Charter and Wissahickon Middle School and High School. He’s been a teacher at Wissahickon Middle School since 2002.

To volunteer, assist with gift baskets or for advance tickets, call Chris Creelman (215–852–2068), Kevin Kilkenny (215–847–3800), Matt Jones (215–778–8293), D.J. Jones (267–784–7746) or Billy Schneider (215–205–3644). Tickets are also available at the FOP, the St. Bernard rectory, Lloyd Sixsmith, McGeehan’s, Parish Pub and the Paddy Whacks on Welsh Road.
