Students win science fair awards

Head of the class: MaST Community Charter School fourth-grade students won awards in the George Washington Carver Science Fair at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University on Feb. 21.

Six fourth-grade students from MaST Community Charter School won awards in the George Washington Carver Science Fair at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University on Feb. 21.

Caleb Weston was the big winner with first place in the Consumer Science category, as well as the Best in Fair award among fourth-graders. Stephen Schmidt won first place in Earth Science, as well as the special Forest Service Award. Tessa Rader won first place in Life Science and the special Humane Society Award. Christina Thomas won second place in Life Science, while Hollie Wolfenden earned honorable mention in Earth Science as well as the special Lady Techie Award. Kelsey Jardine won honorable mention in the Life Science category.

The students submitted their entries to Mrs. Tracy West, MaST’s elementary technology teacher and Carver Fair sponsor. Fourth-grade teachers and aides who helped students prepare their entries included Jenn Andrews, Krysten Bovell, Lauren Dimitri and Elise Behm, along with Deb Champ, Rose Shaloka and Kathy McLaughlin.

Founded by a group of educators and business leaders in 1979, the annual fair is co-sponsored by Temple University, the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and the School District of Philadelphia. The fair encourages urban youth to pursue academic achievement and careers in science. ••
