An SUV struck and killed an elderly woman who was trying to walk across a busy Northeast street during afternoon rush hour on March 25.
Police have filed no criminal charges against the driver, who remained at the scene after the accident. It occurred at about 3:45 p.m. at the corner of Welsh and Blue Grass roads. According to Sgt. Joseph Rossa of the Accident Investigation Division, the 77-year-old woman was in the crosswalk on the eastbound side of Welsh Road in front of a Rite Aid store when a 2000 Dodge Durango struck her. The vehicle had been traveling southbound on Blue Grass before turning left onto eastbound Welsh.
Police did not identify the driver of the vehicle, a 56-year-old woman, or the victim, who lived within yards of the accident scene on the 2600 block of Welsh Road. She was taken to Aria Health-Torresdale and pronounced dead soon after her arrival. The investigation is ongoing, Rossa said. â˘â˘
