Sixty-three volunteers emerged from winter hibernation to take part in the Friends of Pennypack Park’s first monthly park cleanup of the year on March 22, removing 86 bags of debris from the park, along with large discarded items.
The garbage haul included 84 trash bags and two bags of aluminum cans. The assorted items included two shopping carts, two car tires and other vehicle parts, a breathing device, antifreeze, a child car seat, two kitchen chairs, two portable chairs, a misplaced trashcan, furniture parts, part of a fence, a shovel, a wall mirror, a blanket, two American flags, an empty paint can, various sports equipment, two bicycles, a hunting bow, a winter coat, two sandbags, electrical wiring, a coconut and several dozen undelivered Northeast Times.

Volunteers received support from CLIP, Parks and Recreation and the 8th Police District. The next cleanup will be held on Saturday, April 26, and commemorate Earth Day. Volunteers will meet at Rhawn Street and Lexington Avenue at 10 a.m. The raindate is Sunday, April 27. Volunteers must wear long pants and closed-toe walking shoes for safety and comfort.
