Times’ journalists win Keystone Press Awards

Two journalists for the Northeast Times won three 2014 Keystone Press Awards in a statewide contest sponsored by the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association.

Overall, media organizations submitted entries of work that was published or posted in 2013. The Times, a community weekly, competes in a division for nondaily newspapers with a circulation more than 10,000.

The awards will be handed out at the Pennsylvania Press Conference, which will be held on Saturday, May 31, in State College. The Northeast Times staffers honored are:

• Sports editor Ed Morrone won first place in the sports event coverage category for his story on George Washington High School graduate Sharrif Floyd, who was chosen in the first round of the NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings. The article was published on May 1, 2013.

• Photographer Maria Pouchnikova received second-place honors in the feature photo category for her photographs of MMA champion Eddie Alvarez printed in the Times on Nov. 6, 2013. .

Pouchnikova also won a second-place award for a photo story published on April 17, 2013, entitled, “One Final Salute,” which captured the funeral of Fire Capt. Mike Goodwin. ••
