Holmesburg man to stand trial for murder

A Holmesburg man has been ordered to stand trial for the Feb. 2 murder of Torresdale resident Rasheed Shannon.

Claude Thomas, 27, of the 4700 block of Vista St., allegedly shot Shannon once in the face as a result of an argument between the two men outside of Thomas’ residence at about 1:45 p.m. Shannon, 25, of the 4900 block of Fitler St., died on Feb. 3 at Aria Health’s Torresdale Campus as a result of his wounds.

Police did not initially specify what precipitated the quarrel. Thomas was arrested at his home on Feb. 5. During a preliminary hearing on April 2, Municipal Court Judge Karen Y. Simmons ordered Thomas to stand trial for murder and weapons offenses. He is scheduled for a Common Pleas Court arraignment on April 23 and remains in prison without bail.

At the time of his arrest, Thomas was still on probation stemming from a 2012 case in which he pleaded guilty to reckless endangerment, firearms offenses and resisting arrest. His violation of probation hearing has been postponed indefinitely. ••
