Shootout wounds one in Frankford

A Frankford street turned into the OK Corral on Friday night as an argument sparked a shootout that left one man wounded critically and left dozens of empty shell casings strewn across the pavement.

The violence occurred at about 9:33 p.m. on the 5300 block of Lesher St., said Lt. Dennis Rosenbaum of Northeast Detectives. The location is two blocks from SEPTA’s Frankford Transportation Center. Investigators aren’t sure what sparked the quarrel between a 32-year-old man and an acquaintance. But when the other man pulled a gun and began shooting, the 32-year-old went for his own gun, which he has a license to carry, Rosenbaum said.

The 32-year-old suffered wounds of the neck and back. The other man fled. Paramedics took the 32-year-old to Temple University Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery. The other man was not wounded. Police learned his identity and arrested him the following morning. Criminal charges are pending. Police have not released the names of either man.

Crime scene investigators found about 30 spent cartridges at the scene. Some of the shots struck houses on the block, Rosenbaum said. ••
