Recycling bin giveaway is Saturday
On Saturday, May 10, from 9 to 11 a.m., City Councilman Brian O’Neill (R-10th dist.) will sponsor a recycling bin giveaway at his neighborhood office at the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 5, at 11630 Caroline Road. With support from the city Department of Streets and RecycleBank, new recycle bins will be distributed and registered for the Recycle Rewards program.
Anyone unable to attend who needs a recycling bin or would like to register for Recycle Rewards can contact one of O’Neill’s three offices: FOP headquarters building at 11630 Caroline Road (215–437–9167); Bustleton Avenue and Bowler Street, above the 7th Police District (215–685–0432); or 562 City Hall (215–686–3422). ••
Flea market at Holmesburg United Methodist
A flea market and food drive are planned for Saturday, May 17, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Holmesburg United Methodist Church, at 8118 Frankford Ave.
The church is asking the public to bring a bag of nonperishable food items for their food cupboard and hot meal program. Call 215–333–2561. ••
Race for the Cure is Sunday
The 24th annual Komen Philadelphia Race for the Cure will take place on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 11, near Eakins Oval and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
Opening ceremonies get underway at 7 a.m., followed by a 5K run and walk and a 1-mile fun walk.
Among the participants will be Charnise Gillis, who lives on Levick Street in Oxford Circle. She’s just 24, but is a 10-year survivor of breast cancer.
Gillis, a pharmacy technician who attends Temple University, will be part of a race team called Charnise Best Buds.
She will take part in the Parade of Pink, where survivors walk down the art museum steps in an emotional ceremony. She and nine other women will form the Pink Color Guard, leading the other survivors down the steps. And she will greet other women in the Young Survivors & The Big Pink Footprint.
“My personal Big Pink Footprint is firmly planted in faith and in helping save other young breast cancer survivors in the world… the Race is my door to achieving my dreams,” she said.

Rec Center yard sale is May 17
The Lawncrest Recreation Center Community Yard Sale will take place on Saturday, May 17, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Supporting organizations include ShopRite, which will be donating concessions, and the Urban Forestry & Ecosystem Management, which is providing free trees to residents. In addition to the yard sales, local businesses will also be present, helping to inform local consumers of their services.

Calling all ’84–85 Cohox Cosmos
Players, spouses and parents of the original 1984/85 Cohox Cosmos soccer team, coached by Fran McGovern and George Nightlinger, are invited to a night out at Dagwood’s Pub on Saturday, May 31. The event will run from 7 to 11 p.m. Dagwood’s is located at Torresdale and Linden avenues.
The cost is $25 per person or $45 per couple, and includes food and open bar. Payment can be made at the door.

Drug abuse support group can help
Pennsylvania United We Can meets on the first Tuesday of every month at Pelbano Playground, at 8101 Bustleton Ave. in Rhawnhurst. The group provides advocacy, education, awareness and support for people and their families dealing with drug abuse.
On May 17, members will travel to Harrisburg for a Let’s Unite Together Walk/Rally.

GED tutoring is available
The nonprofit Dream Field Academy, which tutors adults to take the GED test, will meet on Monday and Wednesday evenings and Saturday afternoons from May 12 to Aug. 14 at Feltonville Recreation Center, at 231–37 E. Wyoming Ave. The organization provides assistance with test subjects such as reading, English, grammar, writing, science, social studies and math.
“The purpose of these sessions is to provide effective GED preparation to help people learn the skills needed to pass the test to obtain their GED,” said director Anthony Johnson.

Fox Chase Cancer Center will hold the inaugural In Vino Vita benefit and wine auction on Thursday, May 15, at the Ritz-Carlton hotel, at Ten Avenue of the Arts.
The event will raise money for leading-edge research and patient care at Fox Chase.

Historical Society of Tacony to hold meeting
The Historical Society of Tacony will meet on Monday, May 12, at 6:30 p.m. at the Tacony Branch of the Free Library of Philadelphia, at 6742 Torresdale Ave., lower level. The guest speaker will be Rick Spector of Moviehouse Productions, presenting “Forgotten Philadelphia” — a slide presentation of little-known places in and near the city.

Electronic recycling event is Saturday
Archbishop Ryan High School, at 11201 Academy Road, will host an electronic recycling event on Saturday, May 10, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The public is welcome to bring any obsolete and unwanted electronics with a plug.
Items include toys, computers, laptops, flat-screen televisions, cell phones, mobile devices and small household appliances. Large appliances will not be accepted.
There will be a $20 processing fee for televisions and computer monitors.

Letter carriers’ food drive set for May 10
The 22nd annual National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive will take place on Saturday, May 10.
Residents are asked to leave a nonperishable food donation in a bag by their mailbox on May 10 to be picked up by a letter carrier. The donations will go to local food pantries, many of which are depleted in the spring.
