A Philadelphia police officer has been removed from street duty as the department investigates whether she drove drunk in the Far Northeast, struck several parked cars and left the scene of the accident on Friday.
The police department refused to confirm the officer’s name or assigned unit. She was apparently off duty early Friday when the incident occurred in the 7th district, according to TV station NBC10.
Citing anonymous “law enforcement sources,” the station reported that witnesses saw a private vehicle strike multiple parked cars. When the striking car kept going, witnesses contacted on-duty police, who conducted a car-stop. NBC10 reported that on-duty police arrested the driver suspecting that she was drunk. The station broadcast the off-duty officer’s alleged mug shot and posted it on the Web.
The police department’s Media Relations Unit revealed in a printed statement that “an officer was placed in custody as a result of DUI.” The statement added that, “The officer has been taken off the street and relieved of police powers pending the outcome of the case.”
City court records have no listing of a criminal case involving the woman identified by NBC10 as the DUI suspect. No injuries were reported resulting from the incident. ••
