Archbishop Ryan High School student Kathy Nguyen earned the grand prize for the second consecutive year in the annual Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta Art Contest. Northeast-based students won seven of 11 total awards.

Nguyen’s winning painting depicts an eight-man crew rowing down the Schuylkill River past a boathouse with the Philadelphia skyline in the background. Other award winners included Ryan’s Robert Brewster with first place, Ryan’s Alexandra Freedman with second place and Alicia Rinier of St. Hubert’s with third place. Honorable mention awards went to Samuel Owusu of Northeast High, along with Anastasia Oliveras-Rios and Hayong Lee of Archbishop Ryan.

The artists’ challenge was to paint images that depict America’s largest and best-known collegiate rowing regatta. The contest is meant to promote the regatta and promote the sport of rowing among high school students. Members of the Dad Vail organizing committee, the Office of Catholic Education and the School District of Philadelphia judged the artwork. ••
