Inmate gets more time for ’04 rape

Justice may have been delayed, but it arrived nonetheless for convicted armed robber and rapist Lamar Rayson. On Friday, Common Pleas Court Judge Alice Dubow sentenced Rayson to serve 37–1/2 to 75 years in state prison for the brutal 2004 rape of a Wissinoming woman in her home in front of her boyfriend and two children. Dubow issued the state sentence consecutively to a 32-year federal prison term that Rayson has been serving since 2008 for a series of robberies.

In short, the 29-year-old won’t see freedom until he is at least in his late 80s.

“With her sentence, Judge Dubow has ensured that no man, woman or child will ever be victimized or terrorized by this defendant again,” said the rape case’s two prosecutors, Assistant DAs Branwen McNabb and Ashley Lynam, in a printed statement.

The home invasion and sexual attack occurred in the early morning hours of Christmas Eve 2004. The 45-year-old victim was in her home on the 6100 block of Torresdale Ave. with her two children. As her boyfriend arrived home, three armed men rushed into the house behind him and knocked the woman to the ground. First, the intruders ransacked the house looking for valuables, stealing numerous possessions, including wrapped gifts from underneath the Christmas tree.

Then Rayson forced the woman at gunpoint into a bedroom, where Rayson and one of the unidentified accomplices raped her. The third invader kept a gun pointed at the boyfriend and children throughout the woman’s ordeal, forcing them to hear her screams.

Rayson continued his personal crime spree, robbing numerous restaurants and a convenience store at gunpoint in 2005 and ’06. He was convicted of eight robbery counts and sentenced to federal prison in 2008. Four years later, a DNA database administered by law enforcement matched Rayson’s DNA sample to the 2004 rape. He pleaded guilty to the crime last October. ••
