The memory of fallen firefighter and former Fox Chase resident Daniel Sweeney will be honored in the third annual Daniel Sweeney Day, featuring a day-long softball tournament, at Fox Chase Recreation Center on June 22. Proceeds will benefit the Daniel Sweeney Scholarship Fund.
Sweeney died alongside Lt. Robert Neary on Easter morning, April 9, 2012, while responding to a warehouse fire in Kensington. Sweeney was posthumously promoted from the rank of firefighter to lieutenant.
All players are welcome to sign up for the softball tournament by visiting McNally’s on Rhawn at 427 Rhawn St. and speaking to the bartender on duty. In addition, commemorative T-shirts will be available for $20 at McNally’s and on the day of the event, along with hats for $15.
The tournament will be played on Field №1, which last year was rededicated in honor of Sweeney with the help of City Councilman Brian O’Neill.
The Daniel Sweeney Scholarship Fund is committed to helping families finance the education of their children, regardless of race, gender, nationality or religious beliefs. Visit www.danielsweeneyfund.org for information. ••
