Protestant Home to host concert

The Philadelphia Protestant Home, 6500 Tabor Ave., will host a concert by The John Clark Little Big Band on Aug. 7, at 7 p.m. The concert, which will take place in PPH’s social hall, will feature swinging jazz sounds and big band songs. The evening will include a 50/50 drawing. ••

Free shredding event Saturday

There will be a free shredding event sponsored by the Frankford Community Development Corporation and Century 21 Realty from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 9, at the McIlvain Recreation Center, 5200 Penn St. ••

Library sponsors family night

Friends’ Family Night in the Garden, sponsored by the Friends of Holmesburg Library, will take place on Monday, Aug. 11, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Holmesburg Library, 7810 Frankford Ave.

Kids and their families are invited to make some crafts and enjoy soft pretzels and water ice in the library garden. There will be face-painting, balloon art, sing-alongs, storytelling, raffles and door prizes. For more information, call 215–685–8756. ••

Israel Scouts to perform Aug. 7

The Israel Scouts Friendship Caravan will perform Hebrew and English songs and dances on Thursday, Aug. 7, at 5:45 p.m. at Congregations of Shaare Shamayim, 9768 Verree Road in Bustleton. The event is free and for all ages.

Guests can meet the Scouts before and after the show. Supper will be served, with falafel, tuna and egg salad on the menu. ••

Ryan alums form business group

Archbishop Ryan High School alumni are creating a Ryan Business Association and a Ryan’s Young Professional Group. The organization will meet on Thursday, Aug. 7, at 7 p.m. at Katie O’Donnell’s, 4501 Woodhaven Road. There will be a cash bar. For more information, call Mary Anne at 267–280–2034. ••

Find a furry friend at kitten shower

On Aug. 9, the public is invited to a kitten shower at Philadelphia’s Animal Care and Control, at 111 W. Hunting Park Ave.

The event will run from 10 a.m. to noon.

There will be games, prizes and food. Experienced foster parents will be available to answer questions on kittens.

Anyone who agrees to fosters a kitten that day will go home with 40 pounds of litter, a big bag of dry kitten food, a case of wet food and a kitty bed. ••

Business card exchange set for Aug. 7

Grow For A Friend Program flourishes

Adults with developmental disabilities, all residents of the Judith Creed Home for Adult Independence in the Far Northeast, produced a garden as part of the Klein JCC’s Grow For A Friend Program.

The vegetables, when ready for harvesting, will be made into soups for the Klein JCC’s Home Delivered Meals Program.

The Home Delivered Meals Program provides hundreds of meals for seniors in Philadelphia, Bucks and Montgomery counties who cannot shop or cook for themselves. ••

State Rep. Mark Cohen honors poet

State Rep. Mark Cohen (D-202nd dist.) presented poet Diane Sahms-Guarnieri with a House of Representatives citation in honor of her community service in promoting the art of poetry in Philadelphia.

The presentation was held at the Poets on the Porch 2014 festival at Ryerss Museum and Library in Burholme.

Sahms-Guarnieri serves as Poet in Residence at Ryerss Museum and Library. She has conducted workshops and promoted hundreds of poetry readings in the Northeast. ••

Northeast actor to appear at Fringe Festival

Northeast actor David DelBianco will be performing his solo show Broken People in the Philadelphia Fringe Festival on Sept. 12–13 and 19–20 at The Walking Fish Theatre.

All shows are at 7 p.m., and the running time is 45 minutes. The production features three short solo pieces.

Broken People is about people dealing with loss.

“Loss of loved ones, loss of motivation…it’s mostly a dramatic show, but not without its funny moments. It’s a very entertaining 45 minutes,” DelBianco said.

Northeast native promoted at Klein JCC

Sue Aistrop has been promoted to director of community services at the Klein JCC, 10100 Jamison Ave.

Aistrop will continue to serve as the director of the JCC’s Wellness Center.

Aistrop will be directly responsible for the Klein JCC’s Home Delivered Meals Program, which provides hundreds of meals to homebound seniors in Philadelphia, Bucks and Montgomery counties who cannot shop or cook for themselves. It also includes Cook For A Friend, which is largely dependent on volunteer groups and charitable organizations who cook meals that are then packaged and frozen for delivery by volunteer drivers.

An Oxford Circle native, she is a married mother of four adult children who lives in South Philadelphia. ••

Finding Your Funding workshop is Aug. 26

The Women’s Business Development Center will hold Finding Your Funding on Tuesday, Aug. 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. at 1315 Walnut St., Suite 1124.

The workshop will provide information on loans for start-up and existing businesses. A panel of lenders from various financial institutions and loan funds will be on hand to present the information on getting funding for a business. The pre-registration cost is $10.

Butkovitz elected president of PSACC

City Controller Alan Butkovitz was elected president of the Pennsylvania State Association of County Controllers as part of the association’s 100th annual conference.

Prior to becoming the president of PSACC, Butkovitz served as the third-vice president and the vice president. Butkovitz is the first president elected from Philadelphia since the association’s inception in 1914.

“PSACC is an educational organization that provides valuable resources for controllers representing counties of all sizes,” Butkovitz said. “While the levels of government we oversee might vary, we all share the common goal of saving taxpayers’ dollars by uncovering fraud, waste and abuse.”

“We are really pleased to have Alan in a place of leadership on our board, and I look forward to working with him and many of his staff from Philadelphia,” said Shelley Whitcomb, executive director of PSACC.

Off-Broadway hit comes to Bristol theatre

Bristol Riverside Theatre, 120 Radcliffe St. in Bristol, will host the Off-Broadway hit Menopause The Musical for seven performances from Sept. 10–14.

The musical follows four women who meet at a Bloomingdale’s lingerie sale and share their ups and downs in a parody set to classical tunes from the 1960s, ’70s and ‘80s.

Credit union, radio station raise CHOP funds

American Heritage Federal Credit Union and 98.1 WOGL raised $10,000 for Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia during their annual car show, craft show and Member Appreciation Day recently at AHFCU’s Red Lion Road headquarters.

Thousands of area residents and credit union members spent a beautiful Saturday afternoon talking cars, shopping from 50 craft vendors and enjoying free games and family entertainment, including a live broadcast by WOGL.

Judges awarded CEO’s Choice, WOGL Choice and Best of Show trophies, along with trophies for the top 65 cars. Nearly 300 cars were entered.

Proceeds benefitted the credit union’s Kids-N-Hope Foundation, which supports music therapy at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. ••

St. Martin of Tours reunion planned

St. Martin of Tours will hold a reunion for all alumni, current and former parishioners and friends on Saturday, Aug. 23, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Keenan’s Irish Pub in North Wildwood, N.J.

Tickets cost $25 and will be available at the door.

NORC plans Aug. 28 luncheon

The Rhawnhurst Naturally Occurring Retirement Community will hold a luncheon on Thursday, Aug. 28, at noon at Ner Zedek Synagogue, 7520 Bustleton Ave.
