A suspected drunken driver struck and killed a man who was walking along Academy Road near Northeast Airport early last Friday, according to police.
The crash happened at about 3 a.m. on the 9900 block of Academy Road, near Morrell Avenue, when a southbound motorist lost control of a sport-utility vehicle, which jumped a curb and struck a utility pole, in addition to the pedestrian, according to news reports that cited police sources. The identity of the victim was not disclosed. He died at the scene.
The vehicle appeared to be a silver Nissan Pathfinder that sustained heavy front-end damage. Police reportedly arrested the driver, a 29-year-old woman, under suspicion of driving while under the influence. Her identity was not disclosed. ••
