If anyone saw what looked like a lowrider pickup truck in the area of Roosevelt Boulevard and Grant Avenue on July 29, police would like to have a word with you.
That’s because thieves made off with more than 3,500 pounds — that’s a ton and three-quarters — of automotive batteries that they stole from a storage shed at a local Walmart. The crime occurred at about 1:16 a.m. at 9745 Roosevelt Blvd. and was recorded by surveillance cameras.
Two men in an older model pickup truck arrived in the parking lot outside the store, parked near a storage area and cut the locks on a shed-like structure. One man went into the storage unit and handed batteries to the second man, who placed them in the bed of the truck. About 90 batteries were stolen, police said. The average car battery weighs about 40 pounds.
Descriptions of the suspects were minimal. Police described them as males of unknown race who were operating an older model pickup truck with six vertical posts installed on the sides of the payload bed.
