Week 1 high school football recap

Catholic League:

Ryan 21, Judge 20

Fullback Bob McDevitt’s 1-yard run early in the fourth quarter put the Raiders up 21–20, a lead they never relinquished. Ryan’s season-opening victory — and first win over its archrival in two years — was highlighted by strong combined efforts on the defense and offensive line, as well as standout individual performances from running back Samir Bullock (33 carries, 140 yards, TD), quarterback Matt Romano (6-for-11, 131 yards, TD) and tight end Jon Liguori (three catches, 84 yards). Seneca Williams hauled in a 25-yard TD catch from Romano in his only reception of the game. The Crusaders received laudable efforts in the tough-luck loss from QB Zack Carroll (8-for-13, 100 yards, TD) and Prince Smith, who scored on a 30-yard TD catch and an 84-yard kickoff return for a score. Star junior running back/safety Yeedee Thaenrat battled cramping issues and managed just 60 yards on 12 carries, but did score on a short touchdown run and made several big stops on defense.

Public League:

Abington 35, Northeast 34

Despite holding leads of 14–0, 22–6, 28–14 and 34–28, the Vikings couldn’t hold off host Abington at the end of the game. Asa Manley, after leading the team in rushing as a tailback in 2013, was fantastic in his first game under center for Northeast. Manley rushed 19 times for 187 yards and two scores while also completing 6 of his 9 passes for 78 yards and two throwing TD’s, both to Clayton Rush (three catches, 27 yards). Running back Rushawn Grange, who played at Northeast as a sophomore before transferring to Ryan as a junior, is back in the Vikings’ backfield. Grange carried 14 times for 73 yards and a TD, while Lincoln transfer Travon Williams nabbed three catches for 51 yards. Manley and Grange each added an interception on defense.

SCH Academy 25, Washington 15

The Eagles had a slow first-half start in their season-opener but still only trailed the Blue Devils of Springside Chestnut Hill Academy 12–0 at halftime. Washington narrowed the deficit to 12–7 on a third quarter touchdown run by Nigel Sealey, but a pair of Eagles turnovers aided SCH Academy in building the lead back up to 25–7 before running back Bruce Smalley scored on a late rushing TD. Sealey (six carries, 85 yards, TD) and Smalley (16 carries, 62 yards, TD) were offensive standouts for Washington, but Blue Devils QB Paul Dooley proved to be too hard to handle, rushing 19 times for 70 yards and two scores while completing 10 of his 15 passes for 135 yards.

Penn Charter 54, Fels 26

The Quakers used superior personnel numbers and some first half Fels mistakes en route to a 47–6 halftime lead. Fels never packed it in though, outscoring Penn Charter 20–7 in the second frame. Quarterback Aasim Campbell went 7-for-15 for 85 yards and a TD, while Wesley White (six carries, 41 yards) and Samir Coe (seven carries, 53 yards, TD) paced the running game. White added three catches for 44 yards and a score, and Kordell Robinson hauled in a touchdown reception. Coe also returned a fumble for a score.

Southern 14, Lincoln 12 (OT)

In his first game as the Lincoln starting QB, senior Hosea McClam had a strong performance, going 7-for-17 for 52 yards and a TD while also rushing 28 times for 98 yards and another score. The game was tied at 6 heading into overtime, which is not sudden death in high school football. Lincoln scored first on a 5-yard TD pass from McClam to Augustin Allston, but the Railsplitters failed to convert the two-point conversion. On its OT possession, Southern’s Casey Williams scored on a 10-yard run and followed with another run on the conversion, giving the road team a narrow victory.

Downingtown East 45, Frankford 6

The young Pioneers never got it going in Friday night’s opener, entering halftime against Downingtown East 45–0. QB Mikey Morell, only a sophomore, scored on a 3-yard run in the third quarter to ensure that Frankford wasn’t shut out. Armanti Womack (10 carries, 35 yards) and Ralph Hyland (12 carries, 34 yards) were Frankford’s leading rushers, while Devontae Lee caught the only two Pioneer completions for 24 yards.
